Adelanto, California

Adelanto, California is in San Bernardino County, the southeastern part of CA, in the Mojave Desert, 43 miles north of Riverside, California. Adelanto's population (U.S. Census 2008 est.) of 27,500 is approximately 45.8% of Hispanic or Latino origin. In Spanish, Adelanto means "progress" or "to advance," and this became the town's name in 1917 when the first post office was established there.

The California court system has two basic types of courts, Trial and Appellate. Trial Courts, more commonly known as Superior Court, are based in each of CA's 58 counties. The Adelanto Junction is a stop for Amtrak California Motor Coach service connecting Amtrak California's San Joaquin trains in Bakersfield with the high desert area northwest of the City of Los Angeles, including Mojave, Lancaster, Palmdale, and Victorville.

In the early 1900's, the National Old Trails Road was a popular byway. In 1926, it became U.S. Highway 66, and within a decade was paved all the way from L.A. to Chicago. No other highway in the U.S. is as fabled as Route 66; it has been immortalized in song and literature. The Victor Valley and the City of Adelanto are home to the Route 66 Museum, a national landmark along this famous American highway.

The City of Adelanto traded local police department services in 2001 for law enforcement services of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. However, Adelanto is not just a stop on the road for the sheriff's department, as they have established a sub-station in the city that exclusively services the residents of the city. The city also contracts with the San Bernardino County Fire Department to provide paramedic service as well as fire and rescue services, with two stations located within the city limits.

The City of Adelanto school system has a number of specialized and enhanced program schools. In addition to nine other elementary and middle schools in the district, the Adelanto Elementary School District or AESD features such focused elementary education as the K-6 Adelanto Science and Math Academy, Harold George Visual and Performing Arts Magnet & Middle School with its Arts specialty and the Morgan-Kincaid Preparatory School of Integrated Studies. The city is also served by higher educational institutions such as nearby Victor Valley College. VVC offers Associate Degrees in the Art and Science fields from a huge catalog of course choices.
